Zend Delivers Mobile App Enhancements to PHP Developers

 2:29:00 AM     No comments

PHP developers will get new goodies for building mobile apps with the latest release of Zend Technologies' integrated development environment, Zend Studio 12, which was unveiled last week at the ZendCon conference in San Francisco. The company also unveiled a beta of Zend Server 8, which becomes generally available on open systems platforms next month.

Zend Studio 12 brings a mess of new capabilities for building Web applications that are housed on servers and features user interfaces for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Chief among them are support for three open source frameworks for building mobile Web apps, including Apache Cordova (i.e. PhoneGap), Ionic, and AngularJS.

Zend is also now supporting its Z-Ray code inspection facility with Studio. Z-Ray, which was introduced earlier this yea with the introduction of Zend Server version 7, is designed to provide "unprecedented" visibility to what's going on inside of applications in real time. Studio 12 also brings support for PHP 5.6, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and the Eclipse 4 Luna development platform, which supports Java 8.

IBM i shops will be happy to see updates to the XMLService Toolkit, a built-in library for that helps developers extend PHP code to IBM i resources, including making RPG and COBOL program calls, accessing DB2/400 and data queues, utilizing native system APIs, and accessing spool files. The toolkit, which Zend initially introduced back in 2012, is part of the Zend Server for IBM i product.

In other news, the Cupertino, California, company used the conference to unveil a new release of the Zend Server runtime with Zend Server 8.

Chief among the new features in Zend Server 8 is Z-Ray Live, which the company says broadens the scope of Z-Ray to include debugging of mobile and web services APIs. Z-Ray has also been bolstered to provide real-time visibility to PHP's inner-workings within several common applications and frameworks, including IBM i, Magento, WordPress, Drupal, ZendFramework, and Symfony.

Zend Server 8, which becomes available in December, also brings support for running Linux on Power8, in addition to running on X86 servers with Windows, Linux, and Mac OS. You can expect to see support IBM i on Power 8 when Zend Server 8 ships at a later date.

Zend Studio 12 pricing starts at $189 for new users. It's $29 for students and free to teachers, classrooms, and open source project developers. For more info see www.zend.com.

Android 5.0 Lollipop: 10 Most Exciting Features

10:23:00 PM     Android, Android 5.0 Lollipop, android app     No comments

Android 5.0 Lollipop

1. Material Design:

Google's last design language was Holo which was replaced by Material Design. Google went on updating design guidelines for developers to start making Material apps. But with Lollipop, Google is focusing on the main thing – Android's consistency across all devices. Android Lollipop will be omnipresent across phones, tablets, watches, cars and TV too. Lollipop will have a flat look for its UI and all icons. The Material Design means menus will respond more promptly. So Android Lollipop is all about consistent design experience across all Android devices and with this design, elements can dynamically shrink and expand and most importantly the interface has a 3D appearance overall.

2. Battery life fixes:

Google has added a new battery saver feature to the latest Android version which claims to extend the battery life of devices up to 90 minutes. This Android version will display the estimated time left to fully charge the device when plugged in and also the time left before the user needs to recharge the device. Android phones have always suffered from battery life issues due to apps and services running in the background. The power saving mode has been missing from Android old stocks. You'll be able to restrict syncing, background data and also screen brightness to expand battery life. The power saving mode has been tuned in a better way to the Android 5.0 Lollipop. The battery use menu has got a better graph which informs which apps are draining the battery. More battery life is always welcome so Android Lollipop is a win-win situation for millions of Android users across the globe.

3. Notification settings:

Android 5.0 Lollipop has lock screen displays and rich notifications settings. Users can view and respond to messages directly from the lock screen and the richer notification settings in the new Android version includes floating descriptive notifications on the top of activities. These notifications can be viewed or dismissed without moving away from any activity. On Android Lollipop Google has offered better control over notifications. Users can control notifications from apps and sensitive content can kept hidden. The 'Priority mode' can also be turned on via the volume button of the device. There is one more feature called 'Do Not Disturb' mode, just like in Apple iOS, which allows users to selectively silence notifications and calls. The entire look and feel of the notifications is changing as lock screen can be easily accessed now, along with a revamped pull-down menu. The layout and location of notifications have been completely changed and lock screen widgets are removed from Android 5.0.

4. Security enhancements:

Android 5.0 will allow encryption by default. You can encrypt your Android device now too, though it may be a painstaking job. You need to plug in your phone and the encryption process will take minimum 30 minutes. And just to warn you, if anything goes wrong, your data will get lost. But with Android 5.0 encryption will be an automatic thing. Android 5.0 features an opt-in kill switch known as 'Factory Reset Protection' which allows users to wipe out the device's data as per their wish. With this Android you can also unlock your phone in an easier way without entering a PIN or drawing the pattern. You can use an Android watch to unlock your phone which is kept in close proximity. Lollipop also comes with SELinux enforcement which means better protection against viruses and malware.

5. New Quick Settings:

Google wants to curb swipes on devices which are needed to access important functions like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS activation. The new Android includes built-in tools for flashlight, hotspot and screen cast controls which means you can get rid off many third party apps now. Setting up an Android device will become faster now with Android 5.0 as the new Android device can be set up just by tapping it on the old device, though it requires NFC support. All apps from Google play will be transferred to the new device, if the same Google account is used. In certain situations, you can also adjust brightness manually.

6. New Messenger App:

A new Messenger app is present in Android 5.0 which comes with Nexus 6 which is said to be a simplified version of Google Hangouts. This Messenger has been designed for sending and receiving SMS and MMS messages on Android in a quicker and easier way. More updates about this Messenger are still awaited though.

7. Performance Boost:

Android 5.0 supports 64-bit and the new Nexus 9 also features a 64-bit chip, though Nexus 6 doesn't. Well this kind of performance boost will not make a very huge difference for average users but Google will be shipping native 64-bit versions of Gmail, Maps and other apps too. But this development will not mean much if you are using a 32-bit device only. The runtime environment in the new Android version is ART which promises four times better performance and better desktop level graphics performance too.

8. Updated camera:

The updated camera settings supports advanced features like burst mode and fine settings tuning. Full resolution frames around 30fps can be captured in this new update and shooting can be done is raw formats like YUV and Bayer RAW. Android 5.0 also supports UHD 4K video playback, tunneled video for high quality video playback on Android TV and also improved live streaming. Professional features have also been added like controlling settings for the sensor, lens and flash per individual frame. In Android 5.0 developers will be able to implement their own technology to take full advantage of hardware and any mediocre camera can be transformed to a better one.

9. Device Sharing:

Device sharing features have been integrated in Android 5.0 which allows users share their device with family members and friends without giving access to sensitive content. It features a guest user mode with custom options for access which allows users fix the place of the screen which is displayed. There is also a feature in Lollipop which allows users log in to another Android phone to access synced messages and content, if the device is forgotten at home.

10. Other Updates:

There are some more features in this OS and more fixes and improvements. In this new OS finding things will become easier with improved search indexing and search results will be saved across different apps and devices.

Other relevant features of Android 5.0 include improved hardware keyboard accessory support, support for 15 new languages including Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu, improved audio and video capabilities and improved Internet connectivity with more powerful Bluetooth low energy capabilities.

web developer Meaure Programming Languages perfomace.python to visual basic.

2:10:00 AM     Perl, PHP, programming, visual basic     No comments

programming

10. Python

What it is: A high level, all purpose programming language that prides itself on its readability. It’s often used as a scripting language, though it can also be compiled.

Biggest complaint: Indentation is used to specify block structures rather than brackets or braces. Also, heavy use of colons and underscores and module/variable name collision.

How To Get Rid: Don’t work at Google, Yahoo or NASA.

9. LabVIEW

What it is: The Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench is actually a development environment for G, a visual, dataflow programming language, used for measurement and control systems. Programmers use LabVIEW to connect functional nodes via “wires” to determine execution.

Biggest complaints: The GUI programming approach can make anything beyond the simplest of tasks extremely complex.

How To Get Rid: Stay away from jobs programming instrument control (particularly lab instrumentation) or industrial automation. Also, avoid helping your kids with LEGO MINDSTORMS projects.

8. JavaScript

What it is: An interpreted language, originally developed by Netscape, used primarily as a client-side scripting language on web pages. It’s also been implemented for server-side web scripting and as an embedded scripting language.

Biggest complaints: Case sensitivity, different implementations across browsers, lack of debugging capabilities (though Firebug solves that) and odd inheritance rules.

How To Get Rid: Don’t work as a web developer.

7. Tcl

What it is: Developed as an embedded command language, the Tool Control Language has evolved into a general purpose scripting language used for things such as web applications, network administration and test automation.

Biggest complaints: The syntax is almost too simple, it lacks pointers so there’s no way to pass by reference, arrays are stored as strings, it has poor list semantics and confusing variable scoping.

How To Get Rid: Don’t work for Cisco, AOL or CNET or anyplace using AOLserver or the OpenACS platform.

6. COBOL

What it is: A language first specified in 1959, designed primarily to support business applications and government administrative functions, COmmon Business-Oriented Language legacy systems are still widely in use.

Biggest complaints: Extremely verbose syntax (it was intended to be readable by non-programmers), incompatibility between versions, and, prior to COBOL 2002, lack of support for object oriented-programming, functions and pointers.

How To Get Rid: Don’t work in government, financial services or for the military.

5. C++

What it is: An intermediate-level language created as an extension of C which supports, among other enhancements, object oriented programming. It remains one of the most popular languages, used in a wide variety of systems and applications.

Biggest complaints: Too big of a feature set, manual memory management, slow compilation speed and the fact that it allows programmers to switch between object oriented and procedural code in the same program.

How To Get Rid: Don’t work for Adobe, Google or the gaming industry, in general.

4. PHP

What it is: An interpreted language most often used for server-side scripting to generate HTML pages dynamically. It can also be used as a stand alone scripting language on many operating systems.

Biggest complaints: Inconsistent naming conventions for its many functions, security holes, no native support for Unicode, plus it often gets mixed in with presentation code (e.g., HTML, CSS).

How To Get Rid: If you do any web-based work it’s hard to avoid, but, for starters, don’t work for Facebook, and stay away from Wikimedia, Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal.

3. Java

What it is: An object-oriented language originally created for interactive television and one of the most popular programming languages in use today. Java code gets compiled into bytecode, which is then interpreted by a platform-specific Java Virtual Machine, meaning Java programs are “Write Once, Run Anywhere.”

Biggest complaints: The syntax is too verbose, it’s slow, it’s not easy to pass functions, the API’s are over-engineered and lots of other languages can do what it does, but more efficiently.

How To Get Rid: Don’t develop any apps using the Android SDK.

2. Perl

What it is: A high level, interpreted, all-purpose language that’s been called a “Swiss Army chainsaw” and the “duct tape of the Internet.” Perl is used for everything from CGI scripting to system and network administration.

Biggest complaints: The main criticism against Perl, consistently, is that there too many ways to do things. So many, in fact, that it’s essentially a write-only language, meaning Perl code becomes impossible to read (and, ultimately, maintain).

How To Get Rid: Don’t become a programmer.

1. Visual Basic

What it is: A programming language and integrated development environment used primarily in the development of Windows applications with graphical user interface. Created by Microsoft and meant to be easy to use for beginners, applications are built using a combination of graphical, drag-and-drop techniques and writing code.

Biggest complaints: Its syntax is considered too verbose and strange, it requires dynamic link libraries to run, it has poor support for objected-oriented programming and the fact that it hasn’t been officially supported by Microsoft since 1998.
