11:55:00 PM     iPhone App Developers India     No comments

Apple has released iOS 9.0.1 to the public. This update is purely for bug fixes and addresses issues that some users have seen in iOS 9. Notable among these are issues where users could not complete the setup assistant after updating. Also fixed are issues regarding alarms and timers, viewing video in Safari and Photos, and occurrences when users with a custom APN setup would lose cellular data.
As this is a bug fix release, all iOS 9 users should download this right away. Also available today, but only to developers, is another beta of iOS 9.1 with adds further performance improvements and new emoji options.

How to turn off location tracking on Android

1:09:00 AM     Android App Developers India     No comments

What sort of location tracking does Android do?

The very first time you set up an Android device, you’ll be asked if you want to share your location data. If you say yes, then Google automatically adds your movements to your Location History, which you can look at in the Timeline section of your Google Account.

As Google puts it, location history “helps you get useful information – for example automatic commute predictions or improved search results – by creating a private map of where you go with your logged-in devices.”

If the map is private, what’s the problem?

We didn’t say there was a problem! But not everybody is entirely comfortable with every step they take being tracked. If you lose your device then that data could be seen by somebody with malicious intent. If you were a burglar, wouldn’t it be great to see not only where somebody lives, but when they leave for and return from work?

It's also possible that location data could one day be used against you in court, especially if it showed you going somewhere you shouldn't. And of course, some people just aren’t comfortable with private organizations such as Google knowing every aspect of their lives.

What’s the downside to turning off Android location tracking?

You’ll lose some of the things that make Android so good. Google Now is more like Google Meh if it doesn’t know your favorite places, and some apps aren’t much use without location services enabled. On the upside, less GPS use means less drain on your battery.

How to turn off Android location tracking

There are two ways to stop Google looking at where you’re going. On a computer, go into https://www.google.com/settings/accounthistory > Places You Go > Manage Activity and then tap on Pause Location History; a pop-up tells you what you are and aren’t disabling, and provides a link to where you can delete your location history altogether.

On an Android phone it’s even simpler.

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down to Location
  • You’ll see an on/off switch in the top right. Use this to turn location services on or off altogether.
  • Tap on Location > Google Location History
  • Once again there’s a button in the top right that lets you turn your location history on or off
  • If you also want to delete your location history, you can do that here too: under Location History tap Delete Location History. Once deleted this information can’t be recovered.

How to turn off location tracking on an iPhone or iPad

If you have an Android phone and an Apple tablet or an Android tablet and an Apple Phone, you’ll need to check the iOS location settings too: Apple can store your location data and give it to apps too. To turn that off, go into Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Assuming Location Services are on, you should now see a list of apps with two bits of information: a button showing whether access to Location Services is on or off for that app, and a little arrow if it’s used your location data recently.

There’s another screen in here, System Services, and that enables you to turn off system-level use of your location for features such as location-based ads, web browser search suggestions, setting the time zone and so on. Simply turn off any services you want to shut down.

How to turn Android location tracking back on

If you find yourself missing Google Now or you decide your movements aren’t interesting enough to worry about other people seeing them, it’s easy enough to re-enable Android location tracking. This time all you need to do is:

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down to Location
  • Tap on Location > Google Location Settings
  • Tap on Location Reporting and use the on-screen button to turn it on
  • Tap on Location History and use the on-screen button to turn it on
  • It’s a similar process with Apple devices: go back into Settings > Privacy > Location Services and use the buttons to switch services back on.

What do you think? Does the usefulness of Android location tracking outweigh the potential privacy issues, or should we limit how much information we share as a matter of course? Let us know in the comments below.

iOS 9 trackpad coming to iPhone, but only the iPhone 6s

5:01:00 AM     iPhone App Developers India     No comments

Along with the many new features coming in iOS 9, one of them is the ability to turn the keyboard into a multitouch trackpad. On the iPad, this lets users use two fingers to move the cursor around the screen, making it quick and easy to move to other portions of a text field or document and edit with ease. While this feature was enabled for the iPhone in the first iOS 9 beta, it disappeared soon thereafter. However, it looks like it will be making a return to the iPhone, at least the iPhone 6s.

This is because the iPhone App Developers India will be enabling this feature by means of the new 3D Touch hardware. Using two fingers on a small iPhone screen isn’t practical when trying to move the cursor in a fluid and accurate way. However, 3D Touch will allow for a single finger, with a deep press, to move the cursor around.

While 3D Touch is still a new technology, little additions like this virtual trackpad will make 3D Touch a very useful addition to the iPhone line.

Android Wear Mini Launcher Developer

1:11:00 AM     Android App Developers India, Android App Development India     No comments

Wear Mini Launcher was one of the favorite tools in the opening months of Android Wear. Back when the platform's utility was somewhat limited, it was the best way to manually start a Wear app. Of course that utility has become somewhat redundant now that Wear has been updated with an integrated launcher. Even so, the gesture activation function still makes Wear Mini Launcher one of the easiest ways to quickly activate a Wear Android App Developers India without using voice control.

Unfortunately, Wear Mini Launcher seems to have gone the way of QuickPic. On his Google+ community dedicated to beta releases and feature requests, developer Nicolas Pomepuy announced that he sold the application to a new developer. In his August 26th post he mentions a "new team," though at the moment only one person has been associated with the continuing development, another Google+ member named Nan Chen. Oddly, the developer name on the Play Store hasn't changed, and Pomepuy is still listed as the owner of the G+ community. (Since Ontario-based Chen identifies himself as self-employed, it seems possible that he's now the sole developer.)

Pomepuy mentions that he sold the app specifically because he had a "new family member and a new house," and couldn't devote the necessary time to the project. The first public update to Wear Mini Launcher since the sale makes it compatible with the new interactive Android App Developers India Wear watch faces (though each face needs to explicitly support this feature). A demo watch face has been posted to the Mini Launcher publisher account for the benefit of users and developers.
